The busiest travel days in the United States usually occur around major holidays, when millions of people travel to visit family and friends. The most crowded travel period is Thanksgiving week, especially the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving. These two days consistently see the highest number of travelers by air and road.
Another very busy time is the Christmas and New Year holiday season. Travel peaks in the few days before Christmas (around December 20–23) and again just after New Year’s Day as people return home. Airports and highways are often crowded during this entire two-week period.
Summer holidays also bring heavy travel. The days around the Fourth of July, Memorial Day weekend (late May), and Labor Day weekend (early September) are among the busiest for road trips and flights. Fridays before these long weekends and Mondays at the end of them typically experience the most congestion.
In general, travel is heaviest on long holiday weekends and the days immediately before and after major holidays. Planning ahead, booking early, and traveling on less popular days—such as midweek or early morning—can help avoid the biggest crowds.
